Many people dream of working from home, but one local couple has brewed up an unconventional business.
“As soon as you tell them you’re making liquor they say, ‘Is that legal, can you do that?” laughs Colin Schmidt, co-founder of Last Mountain Distillery in Lumsden.
Not only is it legal, Last Mountain is the first micro-distillery in Saskatchewan.
After a year of obtaining permits and approvals from the government and the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority, the distillery is officially opening its doors on Saturday.
Their product? Homemade vodka, distilled from Canadian grown corn.
“A lot of vodka’s need to be mixed, we think ours can be consumed without,” said Schmidt.
Meredith, Schmidt’s wife and business partner, agrees.
“When I first sampled our vodka, that was what I was taken by,” she said.
“You could actually just sip this.”
The Schmidt’s say the secret is in how the liquor is made.
“I would say the biggest thing is our process. We’re hand crafted,” said Schmidt.
“We do everything in small batches.”
Intimate is the Schmidt’s hope for the distillery.
Rather than creating large batches of vodka to keep on hand, they prefer brewing to order.
For the Schmidt’s, it’s a team effort.
“We were looking for something that we could do as a family,” said Schmidt.
“This is a business that we can do together.”
Looking to purchase some hand crafted vodka? The Last Mountain Distillery's grand opening is Saturday, September 3 in Lumsden.
